Rose Bowl Cafe (PA)

A high-quality art print of a vintage 1940s matchbook from the Rose Bowl Cafe and Old Mill Hotel in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The Rose Bowl Cafe opened in 1940 at 337–339 North Queen Street when Bruno and John Coluzzi purchased Tony Feranda’s taproom and began building what would become one of Lancaster’s longest-running Italian American restaurants. With its air-conditioned dining room, cocktail lounge, and signature dishes like spaghetti, ravioli, and steaks, the Rose Bowl quickly became a fixture in the downtown dining scene. The brothers ran it for over 30 years, earning a reputation for consistency, hospitality, and neighborhood charm.

In 1973, the Coluzzis sold the business to a group of local businessmen led by Harold A. Horn. At the time of the sale, the cafe seated 80 people and employed around 25 staff, with plans under new ownership to expand banquet capacity and maintain the existing menu. The restaurant continued operating for another three decades, closing in 2001 after 61 years in business.

The Coluzzi brothers also ran the Old Mill Hotel on Lincoln Highway West during the 1950s, offering roast turkey dinners, seafood platters, and cocktails after 6 PM. Though lesser known than the Rose Bowl, it carried the same family-forward tone, with ads inviting customers to let “John, Bud, Bruno, or Johnny take you thru the mill.” Together, the two businesses represented a lasting family presence in Lancaster’s restaurant scene.
