Past Proof

Krystal (TN)

A high-quality art print of a vintage 1960s matchbook from Krystal, a fast food joint originally established in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Opened on October 24, 1932, by founders Rody Davenport Jr. and J. Glenn Sherrill, Krystal was established during the Great Depression with the vision of offering affordable, high-quality food in a spotless environment. The inaugural order consisted of six “Krystal” hamburgers and a cup of coffee for a total of 35 cents.

Krystal has the distinction of being the oldest fast-food chain in the Southern United States. The brand is renowned for its small, square hamburgers, known as “Krystals,” which are typically served with diced onions, mustard, and a slice of dill pickle on a steamed bun.

Interesting fact: The name “Krystal” was inspired by the founders’ emphasis on cleanliness, derived from the phrase “crystal clean.” This commitment to spotless operations became a cornerstone of the brand’s identity.
